Posted on 12/08/2024

The event was conducted in collaboration with the National Law University and focused on educating attendees about the challenges and legal assistance related to NRI marriages. The program was coordinated by Dr. Alka Sharma, Convener of the Legal Literacy Cell, and was divided into two parts. The first part of the program discussed the nature of NRI marriages and outlined what individuals should and should not do in such situations. Notable speakers included Prof. Archana Mishra, Himadri Kaushik, Ashloi Chali, Alok Mittal, and Dr. R.C. Mishra. Balwinder Kaur explained that NRI marriages typically involve a union between an individual residing in India and someone who holds Indian citizenship but lives abroad. Himadri Kaushik, DC Panchkula, shared her experiences, noting that NRI marriages are common in Haryana and Punjab, often driven by dowry and the desire to settle abroad. Ashloi Chali, Joint Secretary of the National Commission for Women, revealed that around 1,734 complaints related to such marriages are received annually, with 467 of these from Punjab and Haryana alone. Justice Vinod Bhardwaj emphasized the importance of thoroughly investigating every detail about a partner before marriage to avoid issues such as rejection or abuse. The second part of the program focused on self-protection in NRI marriages. Dr. Seema Gupta, Advocate Savita, and Aakansha Yadav provided insights on this topic, with College Principal Dr. Richa Sethia also in attendance. Dr. Seema Gupta advised gathering comprehensive information about one's partner before marriage and cautioned against relying solely on marriage bureaus, as they may sometimes provide incorrect information. She stressed the importance of legally recording the marriage in government records. Advocate Savita suggested keeping legal documents when moving abroad and understanding the legal rights in the destination country. She also noted that in some cases, a marriage in India might result in a divorce abroad due to the local laws. Aakansha Yadav advised against filing false cases in court and emphasized the importance of knowing the legal frameworks of the country where one is moving post-marriage.
